Amendolara
The smart, peaceful town of Amendolara has one of the best kept paese (Historic old town) in the region. Historically a very important site in ‘Magna Grecia‘ which is part of the Greek colony of Sibaris, many archaeological discoveries are proudly displayed in the towns Museum. The lovingly restored Norman castle now plays host to a fabulous restaurant with panoramic views. Locals meet in the evening in the Piazza to eat, drink and be merry with the gorgeous fountain beautifully lit up in the background. Just out of town is the fabulous Grotto Delle Ninfe a natural spa where you can enjoy the health benefits of the mud minerals, slather yourself with mud then jet it off with the thermal showers. Civita, just a short twenty minute drive up into the mountains, famed for it’s very own ‘Grand Canyon’ views from the top are breathtaking and legend has that the ancient bridge at its base contains the imprint from the Devil’s horse! With two excellent restaurants serving local Calabrese cuisine the village is extremely popular with locals in the know all year round. Completely undiscovered from the UK market place this pretty, friendly little town of Amendolara, just ten minutes drive from sophisticated Trebisacce, is a gem.
